Dream Home
Are You Living in Your Dream Home?
It took me a while to count but I have lived in 18 different homes over my 36 years. That may be more than most people will see in a lifetime and I hope that I can slow things down now that I have kids but Im sure I will have a few more moves in me. With all those homes, I have yet to live in my DREAM HOME. I hope to one day have that dream home but for now... I'm still working on it.
Don't misunderstand, my family and I live in a very nice home that more than meets our needs, but its not my dream home. Its not so much about how big the home is, what type of counter types, or how many bedrooms, for me, its about where its at and what you can see from the front and back porch. I would like to be sitting in the middle of 100 acres of standing timber where I could drink coffee on the back porch while watching deer graze through the woodline. Or I may be sitting high up on the riverbank overlooking a 200 acre lake where a short golf cart ride down the hill to the dock takes me to my hammock that swings out over the seawall.
Do I deserve to live in my dream home... HELL YES I do and so do you. So now the question is, what are you going to do about it? Whats your plan? Do you know the definition of insanity? Its doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. My wife and I have a plan and we are busting it everyday in order to bring that plan to fruition.
But unless you were born into a wealthy family, won the lottery or was super successful early in life, it will more than likely take you many many years to land that dream home. So what do you do along the journey, you do the best you can and try to make smart decisions as you work your way closer to your goal.
My wife and I built the home we live in now. Its not a custom home but we picked the neighborhood, the floorpan and a lot of the details inside of the home. It was perfect... WAS being the key word. We have since had 2 children, lost 2 big dogs, started 3 companies (which requires a lot of work to be done at home) and to boot our parents are retiring and are visiting more often. So what was close to our dream home 4 years ago is no longer close anymore. Now that our needs and wants have changed, we have started talking about potentially looking for a new home. The point here is that life is always changing and thus our needs are constantly changing. When the kids get to be teenagers, our needs will change. When the kids move off to college, our needs will change. When we retire, our needs will change.
So ask yourself this question. AM I LIVING IN MY (right now) DREAM HOME? If the answer is NO, then what are you waiting for? Life is to short to settle because if you wait for the right time, that time will never come. Trust me, I hate packing and moving more than you do but if you are not 100% happy in your home, its time to start looking elsewhere.
If your in a position now to buy your end-all-be-all Dream Home then, in my opinion, you should find it and buy it no matter what it costs you, what time of the year it is, or how the market is doing. However I would imagine that if you are reading this blog then you are not in this position and you have not reached this point in your life. It is crucial that you make the right decisions on your next home purchase (or lack of) b/c the wrong decision may put you farther from your end goal.
I feed my kids from the commissions I make buying and selling real estate so, yes, I would love your business, however; the point of this blog is to get you thinking about your end goal and sit down to come up with a plan on how to get there. If your living paycheck to paycheck, what are you doing about it. If you hate your house and your neighborhood but don't feel you can afford to move, what are you doing about it? If your worried that you are going to need to retire soon but that you won't be able to pay your mortgage, what are you doing about it?
Every problem out there has a solution (many solutions). If you think your problem is unique and one of a kind, you are wrong. Someone else has been there, done that and kicked its ass and you can to.
I hope that you know you deserve to have your dream home and that only you will prevent you from getting there so I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes in which i live by
"A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS JUST A WISH"
Good Luck
